RAID - Improvement of reliability of recorded data

RAID(Redundant Array Independent Disk) technology raise the reliability of recorded data by duplicated data storing or/and by processing of pre-assigned parity bits.

HD400/800/1600F-PDR and HD1600F-R allows a maximum of 5HDDs inside and they support RAID function by using these HDDs. RAID level 1,5,10 are supported and they can restore the HDD’s data even if the data on a hard disk was damaged.

WEBGATE HD DVR models provide RAID level of 1,5,10 via hardware chipset and improved the reliability of recorded data. If recording data inside hard disk is damaged, RAID function can recover the data.

Features of WEBGATE RAID

    •  Supports RAID level 1,5,10 according to the quantity of installed HDDs
    •  Hardware RAID system increased reliability than others’ software RAID
    •  Even if one HDD is damaged, the DVR can keep recording
    •  DVR provides Auto-Rebuilding function when the damaged HDD is replaced to a new one.
DVR keeps recording during auto-rebuilding process.

The number of hard disks with RAID configuration

•   RAID levels can be configured differently depending on the number of Hard disks.

 RAID 1

      •   It is usually called as “Mirroring”. If HD1600F-PDR uses 2 internal hard disks, it stores same data into two hard disks
          at the same time.
     •   So when one fails, the other can be used to restore the data.
     •   Its biggest advantage is its stability, but the available HDD capacity will reduced in half.
     •   To use RAID 1 function, 2 hard disks should be installed inside the DVR.

RAID 5

     •   When configuring RAID system except RAID 0 and RAID 1, some space of Hard disk is used as parity for checking
          the Hard disk errors.
     •   In case of RAID 5, certain spaces of each installed hard disk is used as parity.
     •   To configure RAID 5, HD DVR needs 3 or 5 internal Hard disks, and available hard disk capacity will be the number of
          hard disks(N)-1.
     •  When HD1600F-PDR is using RAID5, the recording performance is reduced from 480fps to 320fps.
but, the other models donot show such performance reduction.

RAID 10

    •   Combination of RAID 1’s mirroring and RAID 0’s striping.
    •   This means that HD DVR needs 4 hard disk to configure RAID 10. Recording data is stored into two hard disks at the same
time (RAID 1, Mirroring), and DVR treats disk 1&2 and disk 3&4 as a one hard disk (RAID 0, Striping) like the picture below.
    •   To use RAID 10 configuration, HD DVR needs 4 internal hard disks, and available hard disk capacity will be the number of
        hard disks(N) / 2.
